Under rule 8.244(a), the appellant must immediately notify the court if the case settles as a whole or as to
any party. The court may impose sanctions if timely notice of settlement is not given. (Rule 8.276(a)(4).) Within
45 days after filing notice of settlement, the appellant must file an abandonment or a request to dismiss. (Rule
8.244(a)(3).) If a timely abandonment or request to dismiss is not filed, the court may dismiss the appeal and
order each side to bear its own costs on appeal. (Rule 8.244(a)(4).) In addition, the court requests it be notified
IMMEDIATELY if settlement negotiations are in progress or are contemplated.
