Requesting Non-Identifying and Identifying Information
Adoption agencies, the Department of Human Services (DHS) and courts may release
certain information from adoption records to adult adoptees, former family members and
adoptive parents of a minor child. The law divides the information in adoption records
into two categories: non-identifying and identifying information. (DHS Pub 439) 7/05
Non-Identifying Information
Adopted adults, direct descendants of a deceased adopted adult, adoptive parents, birth
parents and birth siblings may obtain non-identifying information. (MCL710.27). An
adoptee searching for information about his or her birth family should request
non-identifying information. Generally, the most complete non-identifying information is
obtainable from the agency that facilitated the adoption, however, adoption services can
assist. Please submit a letter outlining the information sought and your relationship to the
adoptee. The forms to obtain non-identifying and identifying information are available
through adoption services. We will check the record and make the appropriate referral.
