Request for Preparation of a Character Report
Fee: $150
Category I: Law Student Registrant
1. Law student whose request for a character report will be received at the National Conference of
Bar Examiners within fifteen months of first enrollment in law school.
Fee: $200
Category II: First Bar Admission or Late Law Student Registrant *
1. Anticipated or recent law school graduate sitting for the
examination in

2. Juris Doctor degree was awarded less than one year before this application is received at the
National Conference of Bar Examiners; and
3. The applicant has not been admitted to the practice of law in any jurisdiction at the time this
application is filed with the jurisdiction requesting this report; OR
4. The applicant is a law student whose request for a character report will be received at the
National Conference of Bar Examiners more than fifteen months after first enrollment in law
school.

Category III: Attorney *
1. Presently a member of a bar seeking admission to

Examiners more than one year after the Juris Doctor degree was awarded.

Category IV: Foreign-Educated OR Foreign-Practicing Attorney
1. Member of a bar of a foreign country seeking to be licensed in or to perform limited
legal services in

degree was conferred.

Category V: Supplemental Report
($125 unless the Supplemental Report is being prepared for the same jurisdiction for which
NCBE prepared a Law Student Report, then $75; $200 if the original report was processed
as a Category IV Foreign Report)
Request that a character report previously prepared by NCBE be supplemented to account for the
intervening period from the completion date of the original NCBE report to the present. A
supplemental report can only be prepared if the original jurisdiction releases the original report and
the following conditions are satisfied:
1. The jurisdiction to which application is being made is willing to accept a copy of the original
NCBE character report together with a supplemental report, understanding that no additional
work will be undertaken to verify the original report; and
2. The original NCBE report was completed less than four years preceding the date this request for
supplemental report is received at NCBE; and
3. The entire application is completed by the applicant requesting the supplemental report.
In addition to the processing fee, NCBE reserves the right to pass along the cost for obtaining records in conjunction
with this application to the applicant.
* If either of the Category IV criteria applies, the applicant must apply as a Category IV applicant.
